Oh, man! It's been one hell of a week!
First of all, Emerald City Comicon in Seattle was AH-mazing! There are reasons it's one of my very favorite cons. And this time, I even got to stay a little longer and explore a little of what the city has to offer. Let me tell you, my hobbit-heart was quite content, because I ate WELL. I also made a ton of new friends, both in front of my table and behind their own. I simply can't wait for next year!
I also got the opportunity to talk to two wonderful ladies who helped back BIRDLAND #1
on Kickstarter. (On a side note, Shane and I were really hoping to have the issue lettered and formatted in time for ECCC, but we decided to instead allow ourselves more time to pour over the proofs and be sure the book is just right. We are looking to a May release, possibly premiering in time for Free Comic Book day at Empire's Comics Vault in Sacramento.)
Those same two ladies have been following my work for some time, awaiting my long-promised mythology-fairytale comic BLIND FOLLIES
. After discussing with them my plans and feeling out to be sure I don't disappoint any of my precious few fans who have been awaiting this project, I finally feel confident in making an announcement...
Work has begun on my latest comic endeavor Blind Follies: The Flower and Death
.The Flower and Death
is my version of the story of Hades and Persephone as told in the fairytale-inspired world of Blind Follies, as a prequel to the Eros & Psyche
story I have been developing these long three years. The two stories will be linked, with events in The Flower and Death leading up to and playing directly into Eros and Psyche.
While I always loved the story of Hades and Persephone, it always struck me how Persephone was more of an object than a character. She was a fixture tossed around and affected BY the story, rather than making her own decisions to AFFECT the story. I want to change that. So, I've spent the past 6 months working on the story for a 3-4 part series that tells a slightly different tale, one about a runaway, rumors, and the relationship between death and bebirth.
And now, with the permission from what I saw as two people who really believe in me, I have completed the script for the first 24-page chapter. And, once I am finished with my overdue commissions leftover from my bout with depression
, I will begin storyboarding and concepting with much excitement! Having something to look forward to also gives me motivation to tackle my work and has revived me and my spirit.
*In other good news, I made it through juried selection and will be exhibiting at Fanime-Con
in San Jose (May 23-26). Can't wait to see you all there!Current Projects
