My Cherry Blossom Festival trip CANCELLED :(

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 12, 2013, 10:32 AM

Hullo, everyone!  Bad news...

Due to financial setbacks in the automobile department, I will NOT be able to exhibit at Cherry Blossom Festival this month as I had planned.  :(

HOWEVER...!

In the effort of visiting my wonderful Bay Area friends and people, I have decided to go for a table at Fanime-Con in San Jose this May 24-27, the week before my birthday (31st).  Just waiting on the gallery check, so fingers crossed!
:fingerscrossed:

I hope to have a few new prints and a possible themed sketchbook available for you then.  :)

In other news, I'm apparently the poster child for Sacramento nerd culture.  [link]

And I must say, it's a pleasure to be amongst such excellent and admirable hobbits-er--NERDS.

Concepts, Sketches, and work, oh my!

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 16, 2013, 9:18 PM

Hullo, everyone.  Now that Emerald City Comicon is over and done (and a special thank you to everyone that came to my table and supported me), I thought I should give a quick summary on what I am up to  instead of posting.

First of all, I've been doing my best to be more social on Twitter, where you'll find some mighty fine tweets about my project updates and/or daily weirdness.

Secondly, I've been trying to get back into the swing of daily sketching, but you'll only see those on my Tumblr Blog.  Since Yoshitaka Amano was one of my first inspirations and whose work has nursed me through many art funks, I've lately been working on sketches inspired by the "Final Fantasy IV" remake for DS.

And of course, there's always my Facebook Fan Page

As for projects, I'm still working on concept work for Nascent Games, I have some pin-up covers in the que for Three Sages Games, and I've recently newly started an internship with an indie gaming software company in SF, which are all keeping me pretty busy.

I'm still working on Blind Follies development and concept work, but I admit it's been slow going.

Also, if you want to see me, I just found out that I'll be helping out at the Three Sages Games booth at Sacramento ConQuest April 5-7.

I'll also be in San Francisco exhibiting at Cherry Blossom Festival, both weekends, April 13-14 and April 20-21.

Some Facts About Me

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 13, 2013, 2:20 AM

Hi all.  If you want to learn some more junk about me, read on!

I don't usually do the whole tagging people survey thing, and I'm really too lazy to pick the 10 people to tag.

But I was recently tagged by :iconam-nyeht: and decided to answer her request for 11 facts about myself and to answer her 11 questions, because she's pretty cool and I like her.  Be warned--I'm pretty weird.  So take that into account when reading the following about l'il ol' me.

FACTS:
1) My favorite food is cake.  Although I am a self-proclaimed "hobbit" with a great love of food, and I pursue it adventurously and aim to try new things as often as possible.

2) I listen to mostly orchestrated recreations of video game soundtracks when I draw.

3) My middle name is Rene, which is actually the masculine spelling of the name Renee.  I still like it though, because it reminds me of my favorite surrealist, Rene Magritte.

4) My favorite article of clothing I own is my teal Pashmina scarf, although I only wear it during the fall and winter.

5) I have roughly 35-40 different high quality loose leaf teas taking up an entire shelf of my pantry.  Offering tea to guests became such a chore that I eventually broke down and typed up a menu, broken into tea types (black, white, green, rooibos, herbal, etc) and taped it to inside of the pantry door.

6) I have a collection of Super Mario toys, dolls, pillows, plushes, and fan art and my home office is filled with it.  The only part of my Mario collection not in my office is my numerous Mario t-shirts and my piranha plant coffee mug.

7) I was born in the year of The Pig, and because of that find pigs and things with pigs on them absolutely adorable.

8) I have absolutely NO sense of direction and have thereby earned the nickname among my anime-loving friends "Ryoga" (the eternally lost boy from "Ranma 1/2").  I get lost or turn the wrong way so often that my husband tells me to think of whatever my first instinct is when it comes to directions, and to do the opposite.  Don't bother asking me for directions to anywhere.

9) I am currently a 7th Kyu in the art of Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (that's first rank).  A lot of the same philosophies behind sword greatly help with my focus and attitude toward my artwork.

10) I think most barn yard animals, such as chickens, sheep, cows, or goats, are insanely hilarious for some reason.  Just the sight of a goat can send me into a giddy and crying fit of hysterics.

11) I am a full grown woman who is still afraid of the dark and wishes she still believed in fairies.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is one dream you want to come true?
I want to finish my "Blind Follies" graphic novel someday.

2. What is your favorite game, movie, show, or book character? Why?
Game: Tie between Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger; rich storylines, great characters, great music.
Movie:  The Lord of The Rings Trilogy; I find them epic, beautiful, great acting, and incredibly moving.
Show: Hard to say, but I love Samurai Champloo, Avatar The Last Air Bender, and How I Met Your Mother a hell of a lot.
Book character:  Bilbo Baggins, because he's proud and haughty in the beginning, yet has a fear and longing for adventure that along the way causes him to grow as he learns humility and how small he is in the scheme of things.  His realization of this, coupled with his passion, adds to a collected wisdom that reminds me of my own challenges in life.

3. If you could time travel, where would you go?
Not sure, but definitely not the future.  It would haunt me to know where I'm headed instead of walking my path and meeting my destination head on.

4. What super power do you want?
Immortality (and some leftover for my husband and cats).

5. One thing you would like to change about yourself?
How much I worry about things.  It's seriously a problem.

6. What was your favorite toy, book, or show from childhood?
Toy: My stuffed lamb, Wendy.
Book: "The Hobbit."
Show: Jim Henson's "The Storyteller."

7. When you die, and your soul is transported into any universe, what show, movie, game, or book world would you like to end up in?
Honestly, this is going to be a boring answer...  This one.  This world has been an unpredictable adventure, filled with all the universes of all the books, movies, shows, and games that I enjoy and that inspire me.  I can't pick just one.

8. Would you rather have ctrl/command+z (undo button) or a pause button in your life?
Probably a pause button, so I could muse on and enjoy the little miracle moments a little longer.  I wouldn't want an undo, because I like making mistakes and learning from them.  Gives me accountability.

9.Would you rather have your mind serve as an ipod so you can listen to music anytime or be able to watch your dreams on the television?
I have some messed up dreams, so probably the iPod thing.

10. If you were an animal then what would you be?
A cat.  My husband isn't entirely convinced I haven't already been one in a past life.  I have very catlike mannerisms.  And apparently I just "get" cats, and all cats love me.  In all seriousness, the only domestic cat that has ever hissed at me had legitimate brain damage.

11. If you were to die tomorrow what are the things you would want to do before you die?
Jeez...  tomorrow?  That wouldn't give me much time.  I would probably tell the people I love how much I love them and what I had learned from them or share the memories I've cherished.  I would reflect on my life and how the chapters have played out, good and bad.  And I would want my husband to hold me, because at this point in my life, I am very afraid of death.

Winter Sac-Anime 2013!!!

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 3, 2013, 1:51 PM

Happy New Year Everyone!

This weekend (Jan 4-6), I'm going to be in the Artist Alley #AA1 @ Sac-Anime Con at the Sacramento Convention Center.  Same old show, brand new location!

I'll have a store of prints to sell, including a few newbies, like this little beaut for my fellow mythology geeks...

Birdland Comic
In other news, I'm also helping my friend, Shane, with a some coloring for his upcoming Birdland Kickstarter.  "Birdland" is a beautifully drawn feathered crime noir story about murder and music.

The comic is finished, in all glorious black and white hatching majesty, but needs printed.  There's gonna be some pretty fantastic rewards, so look for that here soon!

In the meantime, grab a 12"x18" Poster of the full color cover (sans title), which I will also have available at Sac-Anime...

Nascent Games
Sorry I haven't posted as much art on here in some time.  I am still very busy with concept work on two different titles for the independent Nascent Games.  All good things are coming!

Blind Follies - Eros & Psyche Comic
This monster or a project is still in the works and grown into quite the epic.  Concepts are still underway, as I continue to study my butt off so I can make this a project truly worth reading and full of the love I have had for this story since I can remember.

Sac-Con, Outlines, and Archeologists

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 1, 2012, 5:50 PM

Another season, another update!  Sorry it's been so long!  ^^;  Been spending some time sorting a lot out and working on some freelance gigs.  Some news!

First...

Sac-Con - Dec 9
I'm going to be a guest at the next Sac-Con next Sunday on the 9th.  I'll have new prints and a few copies of Narcissus left.  So stop by and say hi!

With that out of the way...

Blind Follies: Eros & Psyche Comic
OH MY GOSH, guys…  I just finished this very moment writing the entire, scene for scene, action for action, detailed, and descriptive outline of my ENTIRE multi-issue graphic novel series!  Five years of research, a practice comic, and total reboot…  The last thing to write was the following quote…

"Love to faults is blind,
always is to joy inclined.
Lawless, winged, and unconfined,
And breaks all chains from every mind."

~William Shakespeare

It's going to be quite the epic, I can assure you.  And now to work on the art...

On Archeologists
Like many artists, I tend to struggle with a sense of worth in the big and ever-changing world of commercial art.  It can often be a very scary and intimidating venture when studying and aspiring for improvement.

At lunch today, my husband and I were discussing my ability, or inability as it were, to find myself in my work.  I explained the feeling of being lost, afraid of failure, breaking free from imitation, and trying too hard to rediscover "my style."

In response, my husband said the following (and I made him repeat it so I could write it down)...

"You're not going to find yourself hiding somewhere like in the back of a closet all at once.  An archeologist never finds a complete dinosaur fossil all in once place.  They find bits and pieces of it spread about across one hundred acres and have to work hard to fit the pieces back together.  And it's not always easy, because often times, they're finding many different parts of many dinosaurs.  But through constant digging and brushing and cataloging, in time, they discover an entire dinosaur.  In that same way, through constant drawing, you WILL discover those bits and pieces that, when assembled, are you as an artist."

Anyway, I thought it was brilliant and wanted to share.  :)

Friend's 4-Month-Old Having Open Heart Surgery

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 29, 2012, 9:14 AM

Hi, all!

Sorry for all the silence.  I've been recovery from the busy convention season, burying myself in freelance work, and doing some critical thinking about the future of my training and career in art.

But that's enough about me.  I have something very serious to talk about...

My friend Joe's 4-month-old son, Caden, is having open heart surgery this very morning.

Joe is also the owner of Sacramento County's River City Comics.

Please click on this link if you can help in any way-->  [link]

A donation comes with discounts, certificates from the shop, and much gratitude.

I have also posted this information on my Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, and here.  Any reblogs, retweets, shares, or what have you are also greatly appreciated.

Alternative Press Expo

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 4, 2012, 4:09 PM

So my DA has been really quiet lately...  Sorry 'bout that.  A lot of what I've been working on lately can't be shown just yet, but I assure you, I have been busy!

APE-Con
First of all, I've got APE-Con coming up next weekend.  You'll find me at Table #755, selling my usual wares.

I was hoping to have a lot more merch available by now, including a sketchbook of "Blind Follies" concept art, a collection of chibi sketches, a mythological monster sketchbook, buttons, bookmarks, and new business cards--But, sadly, I haven't had time to produce any of that with my current work schedule.  Hopefully, things will calm down by the end of this month and allow me more time for personal projects.

In the meantime...

Nascent Games
The trailer for Nascent Games' "Kinship", of which I have done environmental concepts and character designs, is nearly done!  It will be premiering to the public on "Good Day Sacramento" Sunday 10/14 at 10am, during Director Gabriel Gutierrez's interview spot.  Lots more work to be done, but we are all very excited as this project comes together.

I have also confirmed my involvement in the concept design for a 2nd Nascent project, so far under the working title "Project 0.5".  Very secret.  ;)

Birdland Comic
Finishing up the colors on Shane Matthew Murphy's masterpiece cover for his comic "Birdland."  I'm very proud and privileged to be a part of something I am as big a fan of as this.  Print date to be announced.

Blind Follies
Always working on it in the few spare moments I have.  It's been slow going, but I have been on fire with inspiration ever since relaunching all concepts and re-doing the script earlier this year.  Much more writing to do, characters to design, art to refine, and comics to practice before Eros and Psyche's love story can be told with the grandeur and romance of the expanded fairytale in my head.

Sac-Con December
Confirmed to appear as a guest at the next Sac-Con, December 9th.  Looking forward to representing amongst my fellow talented Sacramento artists.

Con Schedule Update / Fox News Feature

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 3, 2012, 6:17 PM

And yet another SacAnime has come and gone.  Thank you to everyone who made it such a success and a joy for me this weekend.  It was just what I needed!

In case anyone missed it, here is a quick feature Fox News did on SacAnime-Con this weekend, with me in full cosplay (as Rarity) at the very end.  That's right, I'm dressed as a UNICORN on the NEWS.  Now the whole world will know the depth of my geektitude.  :XD:
-->[link]

This summer marks the last SacAnime at The Radison/Woodlake Hotel location.  The con has grown to such a degree that it has been moved to The Sacramento Convention Center for it's next Winter show in January.  I am already confirmed for the Artist Alley there, as well as a few other shows next year, listed below.

As for this year, I am looking very forward to APE-Con (Alternative Press Expo) in San Francisco this October.

Summer Sac-Anime 2012

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 27, 2012, 3:53 PM

First off, I'd like to say a personal thank you to all my friends and supporters who came out of the woodwork to offer their love and encouragement in response to last week's post.

I am going to be okay.  Admitting my failings and the degree of my emotional state was the first step I had to take to exorcise these personal demons from myself.  Thank you again for being part of my journey.  I only hope my openness encourages others to reach out in similar times of strife.

Now to good things...

Sac-Anime - This Weekend
I'll be in the Vendor Hall at my usual table, with prints, posters, and buttons.  Stop by and say hi!

(Cosplay schedule for my husband and I...  Friday = Finn and Princess Bubblegum.  Saturday = Spike and Rarity.  Sunday = Hubby's sword gi and hakama and my yukata and matching Rarity boutique bow, keepin' it comfy that day.)

I'd also like to take a moment to mention the memorial service for Harison Randall, local cosplayer and anime enthusiast, who was sadly killed by a drunk driver this past July.

There will be a donation table located at the front of the hotel in the afternoon hours if you would like to show your love and support his surviving girlfriend, who is still recovering from the incident, and his family as they battle for justice against the drunk driver.

APE-Con - October
Just confirmed I will be exhibiting at San Fancisco's Alternative Press Expo this coming October.  It will be my first time at this con, so I can't wait!

Other Projects in The Works
-Putting together a themed sketch book for APE-Con.  Theme to be announced.
-Working on concepts and character designs for the folks at Nascent Games for their game Kinship.
-Deidre Dark's Delightful Dolls for for Comic Book Divas, will be moving forward without me at the art helm.  After a lot of consideration and internal debate, I have chosen to walk away from this project.
-Colors for the cover of Birdland by the talented Shane Matthew Murphy is officially in progress.
-Concepts and writing for my comic Blind Follies is always in progress.
    -Study, study, study, read...

How to Get to Step 5-A Story of Depression

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 23, 2012, 1:21 PM

Hi, all! This is going to be a heavier topic than usual today. You've been warned…

For some time I've been debating within myself what kind of presence I would like to be to my very few (oh so beloved) fans, or at least how I would like to present myself on the internet.

If anyone has seen that episode of "How I Met Your Mother" where Ted is vacillating between cool bro and strict disciplinarian for his teaching style, then you would know what I'm talking about.

Clip-->[link]

In a similar fashion, I've been vacillating between "positive professional who only posts about her projects and never brings drama to the table" and "super vulnerable human artist who posts about her pitfalls and failures as a means of relating to and helping my fellow creators."

In retrospect, my last emotional musing ("What Happened to Eros and Psyche?") was not only an outpouring of emotion and an admission of failure, but a plan for success that helped other artists coping with the very same obstacles who later approached me to tell me so. I was told that by admitting what other artists were already experiencing, the concept of self-imposed deadlines and rushed stories, I had made it ok for others to admit it and refocus. Though I touched merely a few, it felt good to know that my failure was still a success in that way.

And now, here I sit, fingers at the keyboard, mustering up the courage to accept myself for the open book that I am and share with you another admission…

I'm depressed.

And no, not in a fleeting, melancholy way, like a passing mood. And no, not for any one identifiable reason. It's a LOT of little things really... But it all adds up, and at the end of the day I have spent 4-6 hours a day for the past 13 months since recognizing my last failure on the internet and in front of a TV being unproductive and hardly drawing at all.

With the start of this year it has only worsened, as some serious issues in my personal life (which I will keep private) have popped up. I have been dealing with those issues, but the sadness and the disappointment in my own stagnation still lingers. And every step I take feels two steps behind. And for every hour of drawing, there are up to 8 hours of lying around in my pajamas without even the energy to want to feed myself. It's pretty bad, folks.

So I've got a few choices here…

I can keep walking the downward spiral until it implodes and all the things I love cease to bring me joy (like drawing), OR I can start asking myself some tough questions.

First question… What am I depressed about? Basically, everything seems so far out of my reach and so hard. Every time I clean a mess in my house, there are more messes to clean. Every time I hit the gym, there will always be maintenance to be had. Every time my husband and I work on an issue, it uncovers more things to discuss. And most disheartening of all, every time I complete a drawing, the more study I realize I have to do. And the more studying I do, the more work I realize needs be put in. And the more work that I put in, the more I realize that I am not where I want to be. And when I realize I'm not at all where I want to be, I begin to resent my art for making me feel bad. And when I resent my art, I don't draw.

Okay… Second Question… I know life is work. It's not the destination, it's the journey. There isn't some finish line to cross or trophy to covet and display that says I've sufficiently cleaned my house, reached my goal weight, mastered my relationship, or become a great artist. I know this. So what am I still going on about? Sometimes it's just hard to see the point if the work never ends.

Third question… Have I just lost sight of living in the now and enjoying the journey, enjoying the work? I really think so. When I keep my house the way I like it, I am proud and comfortable. When I go to the gym, I feel fantastic for the rest of the day. When I'm on the same page in my relationships, I am so much happier having that understanding and strengthening that bond. And when I draw every day, I feel accomplished, energized, excited, and want to tell my stories even more.

Fourth question… So why have I been stopping myself? Why do I say "can't" or "didn't" more than I say "will" or "have"? Eh, the usual artist crap, the self-scrutinizing pity run amuck. Also, to be honest, distractions. The biggest culprit of all would be The Internet. I could go on about recent studies that social media causes depression, but I won't. Fact is my depression stems from procrastination. I'm getting older and my peers are getting younger. With every day that I don't buckle down and study, I find myself further behind with more to learn and refine and finishing my comic seems like it will never happen. Every day I don't accomplish something because I just keep reaching for those little rewards of "likes" or minor giggle-worthy gifs, I feel like a failure. So I further distract myself from failure, and round and round it goes. I'm finally sick of it.

Fifth question… What are you going to do about it? Well, only two things to do: Get off the internet and start doing something productive. This post would mark my first REAL attempt at doing so. I read an article this morning [link] that talked about going on a "social media diet." This doesn't mean no internet, no connection to the outside world, or deleting my Facebook. This just means taking a step back and focusing more on my enrichment, my relationships, my feelings, and experiencing the world around me without feeling the need to post or tweet about it. This means prioritizing what I think of me instead of what others think of me. This means breaking the addiction to every minor validation I get when receiving a "like", "reblog", "fav", or "note."

While I am allowed to be grateful for being liked and having support, I need to do something other than just cycling through the same 5 sites, hoping for updates. I've talked a good game for long enough about how I "want to study" and am "working on improving", but I actually need do it.

Because no one is taking me seriously, not even myself.

And when you don't even want to get up to feed yourself, much less work, read, or draw, then the cycle has already gone on FAR too long.

***

It's funny… When I paid off all my debts and my husband finally forced me to quit my job to pursue art over a year and half ago, I was the happiest I could be. We even threw a little party. I didn't expect anyone to bring gifts, but a few of my sweet buds did anyway.

My dear friend, Amber, gave me a little frame with this image in it:

It's by an artist named Tracy Butler, who you may know from the webcomic "Lackadaisy" from her post on "Making Comics." This is Step 4 in her process. Put a laptop opened up to Facebook in there and that's pretty much me, bitey cat and all.

After recognizing this inevitable part of the process, Amber looked me square in the eyes and said firmly, "Just remember to get to Step 5."

I'm sorry. I got stuck. Going to close the browser now and start doing just that.  I now realize that it's just too painful not to.

Busy as a bee--bzzzzz!

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 3, 2012, 6:16 PM

Hey, all!

I know it's been quite the long time since an update.  I've been working on quite a lot recently...

Friendship Commissions
Although I'm too busy to take commissions right now, they are my favorite gift to give for friends.  Expect to see a big ol' group of those posting soon.

"Kinship" Game Concepts
Been on board with the talented people of Nascent Games [link] for their game in the works "Kinship", an old school shoot 'em up.  Finishing some level concept designs and now working on the character designs.

Comic Book Divas
The Diva's project I've been working on is back from hiatus and back in production.  Pages are a slow process through the studio, but I'll be posting about the title and where you can purchase it when the time comes.

Comic-Con '12 and Tags

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 6, 2012, 6:29 PM

Finally leaving tomorrow to visit family and for San Diego Comic-Con!

Because I'm trying to put more focus into taking my time with "Blind Follies" and working on assembling a new portfolio, I opted to go as an attendee instead of an exhibitor.

To be honest, I've never been to Comic-Con when I wasn't chained to my table, so it'll be a fun experience being able to mingle and explore.

Really looking forward to all the art / writing panels and workshops.  The few I was able to attend last year were quite helpful for me and super informative.  Also can't wait to drop in on some of my other art buddies while I'm there.  It's gonna be a blast!

I'd also like to give a shout out to my buddy :icondarkkenjie:.  He's going to be on the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fan panel, alongside other special guests including Dante Basco!  Don't wanna miss that.  I know I won't.  [link]

Tagged...
Ok, ok...  So I don't normally do these tagged things.  I'm not cool enough or out of the loop or something.  But I was recently tagged with a survey and the questions were really interesting.

1. Are you planning a career in art or do you already have 1?
Yes!  I am a freelance artist and illustrator, just getting started.  Already, I've got quite a few indie projects laid out in front of me I am very excited about and can't wait to start posting about them.

2. What do you normally do on DA?
I post a lot of my drawings, fan art, and concept work for my Comic WIP "Blind Follies".

3. Where do you tend to market yourself successfully (if you do at all)?
I have a variety of networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and DA.  I also attend and sell at A LOT of conventions, including San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon, Emerald City Comicon, Fanime-Con, Sac-Anime, Sac-Con, and hopefully more to come!

4.Do you dread being tagged?
Um, a little...

5.What do you spend your days doing?
Usually working out, drawing, cooking, eating, and various forms of dicking around, including video gaming and internet.

6. Any dream trips you plan for?
I wouldn't say planning for, but I do dream about trips a lot.  I would love to travel.  Italy, France, England, Ireland, Japan, Hawaii...  So many other cultures and food I would be blessed to experience.  In the meantime, I mostly plan all my traveling around the convention circuit.

7. Do you view yourself as a social person or more antisocial?
I was painfully shy as a kid, but no one would believe me as I am quite the social butterfly these days and I talk too darn much.  Making up for lost time, I suppose.

8. Favorite food(s)?
As a self-proclaimed "Hobbit", this is the most difficult question to answer.  I love all food in general.  I am an adventurous eater with a pronounced palate that likes variety, flavorful ingredients, and will freely discus flavor-notes and taste with her husband when sharing a meal.  If I absolutely with no doubt had to pick a few of my favorite things to eat, I'd say sushi, cake, strawberries, pasta, and stinky cheeses.

9. Do you have a facebook page for your work? (link me to it and i will add it :) )
I do!  It's "Art By Sarah R. Straub" -->[link]

10. What languages do you speak or want to learn?
I speak English, and rather well, I think.  I also took 2 years of French in high school, which is almost as good as taking no French, apparently, as I can remember none of it.  I speak a little "Budo" Japanese, which is only helpful in martial arts, and not at all conversational.  I also have a very strong grasp of Latin and the use of it in root words, as my father was an English teacher for a time and a Latin/English double major in school.

Blind Follies: The Tale of Eros & Psyche (comic) [link]
A soon to come mythology-themed webcomic that blends fairy tales with the legends of old for a unique take on the famous tale.

This story has always been very close to my heart.  I had hoped over the years to have started the comic sooner, but due to research, feedback, reviews, and critiques, the comic is finally get the love and room to grow that it has always deserved.  I promised it will be worth the wait.  <3

Pokemon Awkward Contest!

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 13, 2012, 8:08 PM

Hi, all!

Finally starting to conquer my long neglected pile of art projects (not done due to more conventions and personal issues).  Again, don't worry guys!  I'm doing ok.  :)

One of which that was due today was the...

Pokemon Awkward Fan Art Contest!  [link]
Whew!  Finished that up in record time.  I tell you though, all that flatting of all those pieces took for-EVAH!  It was a really fun piece nonetheless.

12 winners get featured in :icondarkkenjie: and :iconchukairi:'s "Pokemon Awkward" book and even get a signed copy.

:iconfezzikplz::iconsaysplz:"Inigo, I hope we win."

Gallery Re-arranging
After being a deviant for 8 years now, it was about time I went through and audited my current gallery.  If you have any trouble finding a deviation of mine, check the scraps section.  It's probably running around there on the farm with the other scraps.

Username Change! --Formerly LunaKenei

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 6, 2012, 11:00 AM

Hey, all! Just a heads up that I changed my username to my real name. I've been wanting to do this for ages and am so glad DA finally made the option available without having to switch to a new account!

Luna Kenei was the main character from a long-winded fantasy series I used to write back when I was a kid. It was an awkward mish-mash of settings and genres, but my baby at the time. Since I have no intention of revisiting the endeavor, it just made more sense to use my real name.

Other changes...

Geeks in Love
Bad news, geeks...  I've decided to officially kill this webcomic for now.  I kept letting myself down on updates and refusing to work on new material as the countdown to new strips continued.  Truth be told, a lot of my recent and briefly mentioned personal hardships have left me uninspired to continue work on this project.  Don't worry--I'm doing much better lately.  I would rather just focus my effort on defining my style as an artist, focusing on my portfolio, and making progress on my long-promised graphic novel "Blind Follies."

Blind Follies (Eros & Psyche Comic)
Just one more month of focusing on business commissions before I can really dive into progress on this!  So much work to be done on it...  I had no idea how long it takes to make a story truly worth telling, but between research, concepts, designs, and all the other junk that needs fleshed out, I've got quite a road ahead of me.  Can't wait to start running!

Emerald City Comicon

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 19, 2012, 9:48 AM

So WonderCon has come and gone.

Loads of fun, as usual, especially thanks to my tiny fan-base.  I'm always floored at how many people tell me, show me, or send me photos of my art framed on their walls.  Seriously, you guys make my day!

One fan in particular, who had purchased many of my works as gifts for his family and friends the previous year, gifted me with a Jayne-hat (from "Firefly") to further show his appreciation (as if spending money on my art wasn't more than enough).  It warmed my heart, as well as my ears in the strangely bitter Southern Californian cold.

As for new visitors to my table, it is always such a pleasure geeking out with the lot of you!  Meeting you is always the highlight of my con-experience.

I'd like to add that I was also quite touched when I ran into my friend, Mark of Monstark Studios, whereupon he applauded the honestly and personal nature of one of my previous posts concerning the future of my graphic novel Blind Follies.  He told me he was quite intrigued by my mention of the "self-imposed deadline" and inspired to take the time on his own comic in the works to make it what he truly envisions, while enjoying the process every step of the way.  Admitting failure or setbacks is always a tough choice for me, as I often worry it will come across as "whiny", which is never my intention.  To hear that I may be helping others cope with their own creative processes and allowing their projects to come to true fruition is a wonderful thing indeed.

...So what's next?
