Sacramento Art Walk

Happy Year of The Horse, everybody!  It's time for February's 2nd Saturday Sacramento Art Walk, 2/8/14!  All day I'll be hanging out with a small display of my works at Angel's Art Gallery next to S.O.B. (Son of a Bean) Coffee @ 1029 Del Paso Blvd.

Projects

-Commissions: After a long year of battling depression and stress, I am have wrapped up my freelance jobs and will be finishing all my long outstanding commissions (including those from my cat's surgery) by the end of this month.  I will be contacting everyone soon.

-BIRDLAND COMIC: Artist/creator Shane has finished the B/W version of the comic and asked me to help with the lettering.

-Some pinup designs I've done will soon feature on new packaging for many table-top titles by Three Sages Games.

-Slowly and still working on making my mythology-fairytale comic BLIND FOLLIES worth the wait.  Telling this story has been my dream more than 5 years in the making.  While I've finally finished the writing on the 6 part Eros & Psyche graphic novel, I've realized I need more practice on the visual side of things before diving in.  My plan is to try and "learn by doing" in a shorter 2-3 part story set withing the same fantasy world of Blind Follies.

LAST DAY FOR BIRDLAND (please read)

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 21, 2013, 11:06 AM

People of Deviant Art!  I know DA has been losing it's popularity as of late, but please don't let me down.

The beautiful comic I'm coloring is on it's LAST DAY and we are only $460 away from our final stretch goal where we will be able to send all backers over $10 a printed physical copy of the FULL COLOR EDITION.

If you haven't seen the artwork, please do yourself a favor and go check it out.  Shane's work speaks for itself, and I say again how thrilled I am to be a part of this truly stunning project (and now with James O'Barr artist / creator of The Crow doing the variant cover).  [KICKSTARTER LINK]

Less than 24 hours are left in the BIRDLAND KICKSTARTER.

This really is your LAST CHANCE to get your hands on Birdland merch, art, and other kickstarter goodies.

*We still have only ONE SLOT LEFT in the TIN PAN ALLEY tier for your LAST and only chance to be a character in Birdland 2 and receive original art from Shane. (Also comes with limited edition book, bookmark, PDF, choice of print, 11x17 SIGNED James O'Barr variant poster, copy of Variant book, PDF of Full color edition once it is completed, & URL to exclusive Birdland #2 content).

**We also have plenty of JAMES O'BARR variant / SIGNED poster tiers at a low price that will be gone forever. (Also comes with bookmark, choice of print, PDF of original edition, PDF of the color edition once it is completed, & URL to exclusive Birdland #2 content).

***Also, existing backers can "manage your pledge" and add $10 to your donation for a copy of the book with the variant cover by O'Barr added to your tier.

****The Limited Edition tier is also a great value and gets you the Limited Edition book, your name printed in every Birdland #1, bookmark, your choice of print, PDF of the original version, PDF of the full color version once it is completed, 11x17 UNSIGNED variant poster, & URL to exclusive Birdland #2 content for only $40. (Manage your pledge and add $10 to that and you just got the Variant book and pretty much everything we have available in print for only $50).

Thank you for your time and for allowing me to nag you with my incessant posting.  The moment I first met Shane and saw Birdland, gasping as I opened the pages, I thought, "The world has got to see this."  Since then I have done everything in my power to help make that happen.  That's how much I believe in this book.

And the book has given back.  Working on the colors has helped remind me of my joy when it comes to my torrid relationship with art.  Birdland serves as a wooden sign on my path pointing me toward a direction I feel I'm meant to be.  After spending my first session of 13 hours coloring the cover, I stood and for the first time in years wasn't aware of the time of day, couldn't remember when I last ate, and honestly really had to pee.  Despite the last part, it felt great.  I couldn't remember the last time I lost myself in the process.  Birdland has and always will be a source of inspiration for me and something that motivates me to create for myself and for the sake of what I love about art and why I do it, to enjoy the process and hope others enjoy the results.

So again, thank you all for being a part of this with me.  I really hope you will like the colored book.

Birdland Has Left the Nest

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 29, 2013, 6:04 PM

BIRDLAND COMIC KICKSTARTER (Now Live)
www.kickstarter.com/projects/1…

My very talented friend Shane Matthew Murphy has made a masterpiece of a comic.  It's all done and the kickstarter is officially live.  And while we have met our meager print goal, there are still a lot of things we would like to do with the project.  So we need your help!

If we hit our $7000 stretch goal, I'll be able to color all of the 24 pages for a full color special edition of the black and white comic, available wherever "Birdland #1" is sold.  A special edition color bookmark will also  be to added to all reward tiers over $10 as thank you for the support.

$7000 – BIRDLAND IN TECHNICOLOR!
Shane writes...  "Production begins on a FULL COLOR special edition of BIRDLAND #1, colored by Sarah R. Straub (cover, bookmark), for future availability wherever BIRDLAND #1 is sold! This is an idea I've wanted to see materialize since I began seeing Sarah's progress on the colored cover of the comic late last year. Something I had not anticipated while I was creating these pages, though perhaps I should have considering the highly chromatic nature of birds, was just how vividly the addition of color would bring these characters to life. It made me look at the project from an entirely different perspective, while also having the added perk of allowing me to enjoy my own pages again and in a brand new way. The standard edition of BIRDLAND will always be in black and white. It was conceived in black and white, and will continue to be produced in that way. However, I truly believe that what Sarah will bring to this full color special edition of the comic will make for a lush, vibrant and unique way of experiencing this aviary world. A colored "The Birds of Birdland" bookmark set for all backers over $10 if this goal is met."

**Any shares or signal boosts are also greatly appreciated.  Bird is the word!

There is also talks of future stretch goals should we meet this one, so stay tuned!

Hullo everyone!  Anime Expo is just around the corner.  I am so excited to be going there to sell for my very first time.

Please stop by table #C71 in the artist alley to say hello and help make my first AX a friendly experience.  I'll have prints and brand new business cards.  I might also have a surprise or two, including help from my lovely artist friend :iconlesliesketch:

I'm also next to my other lovely artist friend :icondarksunrose:  The seating chart still isn't officially finished, so hopefully we won't get moved too much.  So keep an eye out for updates before the con for when they finalize all the locations.

Really looking forward to a fun-filled weekend with my talented lady friends and fellow anime geeks!

An Update

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 5, 2013, 3:09 PM

Realized I've accidentally been neglecting my DA as of late.  With my current work flow, it's sometimes hard making updates on this thing.  So if there's the smallest chance you may want more Straub in your life...

Tumblr
Personal day to day interests, sketches, and such.

Twitter
Thoughts, photos, jokes, sketches, etc.

Facebook
Art related updates and announcements, etc.

------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding my cat, Lily...

Thanks to everyone, I collected more commissions than I even thought I would and it really helped!

Lily's mass turned out to be a malignant mammary tumor (basically kitty breast cancer).  It was a tough surgery on the little thing and she had a rough recovery, as they had to excise much of her stomach muscle in the process of the removal.  She spent the first week hiding under the bed and unable to climb stairs or hop up on anything.  After several trips back (for a cone, antibiotics to treat the onset of an infection, and suture removal) she seems to be in good spirits and has a wicked scar.  She's able to run and jump and is playing again with our other cat, Link (so he's no longer depressed).

There's a chance the mass can grow back, but the hope is that we got it all out and she'll be fine for some time.  I'll need to get a sonogram later in the year ($375) to make sure no other masses have appeared, so I'll be looking to open up commissions again around then.

------------------------------------------------------------

As for current projects...

Working on some pixel art for my gaming internship.  Can't talk much more about it beyond that for now, but my company will be posting a Kickstarter soon.  So stay tuned.

Still working on some colors for Shane Matthew Murphy's gorgeous "Birdland" comic.  Website, kickstarter, and other info coming soon.

Brute forcing my way through some level concepts for Nascent Games "All Good Things."

Finishing up my long list of Lily-commissions.

Working on some secret costumes for The Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball.

HELP - Art Sale + Commissions for my cat's Surgery

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 17, 2013, 4:32 PM

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Yesterday I took my cat, Lily, to the vet and we discovered a mass on her abdomen that needed to be removed and sent in for biopsy. The mass was bigger than a marble and had to be removed along with the surrounding area, including some of the muscle in her abdominal wall, requiring two layers of sutures.  The total cost for the exam and procedure came to $560 that I do not currently have. I have thrown it on a credit card for now, but am opening commissions and have put up some original art for sale to try and soothe the cost.

You can check out my COMMISSION pricing and the art I have listed FOR SALE here: straubcomics.com/post/48230688…

If there is a piece you would like to buy or art you would like to commission me to do, please note me here on DA or email me at sarah.r.straub@gmail.com.

I am negotiable on pricing, so don't be afraid to ask. Thank you in advance to everyone!

The first time I met Lily was at a volunteer rescue over 5 years ago.  The rescue had selected 10 or so cats that met my specifications (adult, female, possibly in need of extra TLC or special attention).  When they brought out Lily, she was shaking and terrified, her eyes darting about the room for a place to hide.  Suddenly, her vibrant green eyes locked onto mine and she held out her paws.  As I took her into my arms, she pressed against my chest and buried her head into my armpit.  From that moment on, she was mine and I was hers.  And Lily would go on to be my shadow, following from room to room every day in my house and waiting til I went to bed so she could curl up on my chest until I turned off the light.  So I really hope she is all right.

Thank you again. ~Sarah

My Cherry Blossom Festival trip CANCELLED :(

Hullo, everyone!  Bad news...

Due to financial setbacks in the automobile department, I will NOT be able to exhibit at Cherry Blossom Festival this month as I had planned.  :(

HOWEVER...!

I hope to have a few new prints and a possible themed sketchbook available for you then.  :)

Concepts, Sketches, and work, oh my!

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 16, 2013, 9:18 PM

Hullo, everyone.  Now that Emerald City Comicon is over and done (and a special thank you to everyone that came to my table and supported me), I thought I should give a quick summary on what I am up to  instead of posting.

First of all, I've been doing my best to be more social on Twitter, where you'll find some mighty fine tweets about my project updates and/or daily weirdness.

Secondly, I've been trying to get back into the swing of daily sketching, but you'll only see those on my Tumblr Blog.  Since Yoshitaka Amano was one of my first inspirations and whose work has nursed me through many art funks, I've lately been working on sketches inspired by the "Final Fantasy IV" remake for DS.

And of course, there's always my Facebook Fan Page

As for projects, I'm still working on concept work for Nascent Games, I have some pin-up covers in the que for Three Sages Games, and I've recently newly started an internship with an indie gaming software company in SF, which are all keeping me pretty busy.

I'm still working on Blind Follies development and concept work, but I admit it's been slow going.

Also, if you want to see me, I just found out that I'll be helping out at the Three Sages Games booth at Sacramento ConQuest April 5-7.

I'll also be in San Francisco exhibiting at Cherry Blossom Festival, both weekends, April 13-14 and April 20-21.

Some Facts About Me

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 13, 2013, 2:20 AM

Hi all.  If you want to learn some more junk about me, read on!

I don't usually do the whole tagging people survey thing, and I'm really too lazy to pick the 10 people to tag.

But I was recently tagged by :iconam-nyeht: and decided to answer her request for 11 facts about myself and to answer her 11 questions, because she's pretty cool and I like her.  Be warned--I'm pretty weird.  So take that into account when reading the following about l'il ol' me.

FACTS:
1) My favorite food is cake.  Although I am a self-proclaimed "hobbit" with a great love of food, and I pursue it adventurously and aim to try new things as often as possible.

2) I listen to mostly orchestrated recreations of video game soundtracks when I draw.

3) My middle name is Rene, which is actually the masculine spelling of the name Renee.  I still like it though, because it reminds me of my favorite surrealist, Rene Magritte.

4) My favorite article of clothing I own is my teal Pashmina scarf, although I only wear it during the fall and winter.

5) I have roughly 35-40 different high quality loose leaf teas taking up an entire shelf of my pantry.  Offering tea to guests became such a chore that I eventually broke down and typed up a menu, broken into tea types (black, white, green, rooibos, herbal, etc) and taped it to inside of the pantry door.

6) I have a collection of Super Mario toys, dolls, pillows, plushes, and fan art and my home office is filled with it.  The only part of my Mario collection not in my office is my numerous Mario t-shirts and my piranha plant coffee mug.

7) I was born in the year of The Pig, and because of that find pigs and things with pigs on them absolutely adorable.

8) I have absolutely NO sense of direction and have thereby earned the nickname among my anime-loving friends "Ryoga" (the eternally lost boy from "Ranma 1/2").  I get lost or turn the wrong way so often that my husband tells me to think of whatever my first instinct is when it comes to directions, and to do the opposite.  Don't bother asking me for directions to anywhere.

9) I am currently a 7th Kyu in the art of Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (that's first rank).  A lot of the same philosophies behind sword greatly help with my focus and attitude toward my artwork.

10) I think most barn yard animals, such as chickens, sheep, cows, or goats, are insanely hilarious for some reason.  Just the sight of a goat can send me into a giddy and crying fit of hysterics.

11) I am a full grown woman who is still afraid of the dark and wishes she still believed in fairies.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is one dream you want to come true?
I want to finish my "Blind Follies" graphic novel someday.

2. What is your favorite game, movie, show, or book character? Why?
Game: Tie between Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger; rich storylines, great characters, great music.
Movie:  The Lord of The Rings Trilogy; I find them epic, beautiful, great acting, and incredibly moving.
Show: Hard to say, but I love Samurai Champloo, Avatar The Last Air Bender, and How I Met Your Mother a hell of a lot.
Book character:  Bilbo Baggins, because he's proud and haughty in the beginning, yet has a fear and longing for adventure that along the way causes him to grow as he learns humility and how small he is in the scheme of things.  His realization of this, coupled with his passion, adds to a collected wisdom that reminds me of my own challenges in life.

3. If you could time travel, where would you go?
Not sure, but definitely not the future.  It would haunt me to know where I'm headed instead of walking my path and meeting my destination head on.

4. What super power do you want?
Immortality (and some leftover for my husband and cats).

5. One thing you would like to change about yourself?
How much I worry about things.  It's seriously a problem.

6. What was your favorite toy, book, or show from childhood?
Toy: My stuffed lamb, Wendy.
Book: "The Hobbit."
Show: Jim Henson's "The Storyteller."

7. When you die, and your soul is transported into any universe, what show, movie, game, or book world would you like to end up in?
Honestly, this is going to be a boring answer...  This one.  This world has been an unpredictable adventure, filled with all the universes of all the books, movies, shows, and games that I enjoy and that inspire me.  I can't pick just one.

8. Would you rather have ctrl/command+z (undo button) or a pause button in your life?
Probably a pause button, so I could muse on and enjoy the little miracle moments a little longer.  I wouldn't want an undo, because I like making mistakes and learning from them.  Gives me accountability.

9.Would you rather have your mind serve as an ipod so you can listen to music anytime or be able to watch your dreams on the television?
I have some messed up dreams, so probably the iPod thing.

10. If you were an animal then what would you be?
A cat.  My husband isn't entirely convinced I haven't already been one in a past life.  I have very catlike mannerisms.  And apparently I just "get" cats, and all cats love me.  In all seriousness, the only domestic cat that has ever hissed at me had legitimate brain damage.

11. If you were to die tomorrow what are the things you would want to do before you die?
Jeez...  tomorrow?  That wouldn't give me much time.  I would probably tell the people I love how much I love them and what I had learned from them or share the memories I've cherished.  I would reflect on my life and how the chapters have played out, good and bad.  And I would want my husband to hold me, because at this point in my life, I am very afraid of death.

Winter Sac-Anime 2013!!!

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 3, 2013, 1:51 PM

Happy New Year Everyone!

This weekend (Jan 4-6), I'm going to be in the Artist Alley #AA1 @ Sac-Anime Con at the Sacramento Convention Center.  Same old show, brand new location!

I'll have a store of prints to sell, including a few newbies, like this little beaut for my fellow mythology geeks...
Blind Follies - Hades Helmet by SarahRStraub

Birdland Comic
In other news, I'm also helping my friend, Shane, with a some coloring for his upcoming Birdland Kickstarter.  "Birdland" is a beautifully drawn feathered crime noir story about murder and music.

The comic is finished, in all glorious black and white hatching majesty, but needs printed.  There's gonna be some pretty fantastic rewards, so look for that here soon!

In the meantime, grab a 12"x18" Poster of the full color cover (sans title), which I will also have available at Sac-Anime...
BIRDLAND #1 Comic Front Cover by SarahRStraub

Nascent Games
Sorry I haven't posted as much art on here in some time.  I am still very busy with concept work on two different titles for the independent Nascent Games.  All good things are coming!

Blind Follies - Eros & Psyche Comic
This monster or a project is still in the works and grown into quite the epic.  Concepts are still underway, as I continue to study my butt off so I can make this a project truly worth reading and full of the love I have had for this story since I can remember.
