Hello, DeviantArt community! It's been a while, so please allow me to reintroduce myself:

I'm Sarah, a traditional illustrator from Sacramento, CA, working to publish my art book and complete my tarot deck.

My deeply personal artwork—drawn using primarily a red and blue double-ended colored pencil—and essay-style musings work together to explore the themes of mental disorder, personal wellness, and attachment theory as seen through the lenses of Greek mythology and symbolism.

Happy New Year!

4 min read

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! With 2016 upon us, I am taking the opportunity to make a lot of changes and push some projects into motion...

*For more up-to-date glimpses into my sketches and works in progress, check out my Instagram or Twitter.

Witch and Wizard Story
Though still untitled, work has been pouring out of me on a silly little magical story that popped into my head recently. I am having an absolute blast learning my process for visual development and sequential storytelling with this project! Sometimes you have to take a step back and not allow your projects to become too precious. Just start the path and see where it takes you.

The Lemiscus Book
Work continues on my very personal collection of pieces and the invisible ties, false limitations, and self-imposed restrictions therein.

Wee Watercolors

Still need to upload a lot of self portraits to this new gallery section. These are simple and silly, but they are just so much fun! I can't stop.

Blind Follies: The Flower and Death (Hades & Persephone comic)

*Work on the comic is on hiatus. While I've finished my rewrites on the 10-issue graphic novel length script, I've realized the project has become so large and precious to me that I am unable to approach it without more sequential experience. So in the meantime, I'm working on a few other projects to beef up my skill for this mythological epic.

The Lemiscus Book
Work continues on the book! Getting to a place where I hope to be producing one to two illustrations per week. I can't wait to get all these ideas on paper!

Lemiscus Book - Out of Misery by sketchykraft

"Lemiscus" is Latin for "a ribbon," something I have seen pop up on my work again and again. The Chinese believed that fate was a red string that connected everything. While I don't believe in pre-destiny, I do believe that we make decisions today that limit our options tomorrow. But often times, these limitations are false and as easy to tear as ribbon. Likewise, the relationships between things are as fragile and delicate as ribbon is easy to cut.

The Lemiscus book is an exercise in economy (using limited colors and tools), personal symbolism (exploring the masks, ribbons, and other symbols that continue to emerge in my work), and finding balance (blending the red and blue colors from a double-ended animation pencil in an illustrative way).

Wee Watercolors
I will be adding a new section to the gallery and uploading my silly little watercolor warmup self portraits and fanarts (because I love them and they are so fun)!

Ink and Ribbon

4 min read

Inky Woman Sketchbook
Lately, I've been doing all my warm-up drawings in brush-pen and ink. I'm thinking of collecting these ink sketches into a zine or small book, to be for sale somewhere online. I used to draw with brushpen quite a bit and greatly missed it, so it's nice to return to the more frenzied way of drawing that the medium provides for me. Got some catch-up work to do for #inktober as well.

This book is very special to me. While simple in presentation, I am discovering through it who I am as an artist. I hope others will also enjoy the journey.

Name Change
Expect to see my DevID and artist name change in the near future. Going back to using my maiden name for my work. I'll also be weeding through old deviations and adding lots of old sketches.

916 Ink Makes Comics

Finished work on year 2 of the amazing 916 Ink Makes Comics
Comic stories written by kids, and drawn by comic artists. If you're a fan of promoting youth literacy (which you should be), check it out! I can't say enough wonderful things about this project.

The Lemiscus Book

With a lot of transitions happening in my life, I am channeling my feelings into illustrations and working on my first artbook, utilizing the personal symbolism of ribbons, masks, birds, horns, flowers, and arrows that I have seen return again and again to my work.
